Recordings at Risk is a national regranting program administered by CLIR to support the preservation of rare and unique audio, audiovisual, and other time-based media of high scholarly value through digital reformatting. The program aims to help organizations identify priorities and develop practical strategies for digital reformatting, build relationships with partners, and raise awareness of best practices. Recordings at Risk has been designed to serve the needs of institutions without access to on-site facilities and without local expertise to support digital reformatting of audio and audiovisual recordings; applicants are required to work with a qualified external service provider. Awards cover costs of preservation reformatting for fragile and/or obsolete time-based media content by qualified external service providers. Eligible media may include, but are not necessarily limited to, magnetic audio and video tape, grooved discs, wax cylinders, wire recordings, and film (with or without sound). An independent review panel, comprised of scholars in a variety of domains and technologists with expertise in digitization and digital preservation, will evaluate applications based on impact, urgency, potential for preservation, and approach to access.

CLIR will be hosting a Applicant Question & Answer Session on March 8, 2023 at 2 PM. Please register here to attend the upcoming session. You may also view a recording of a previously hosted informational webinar and access the presentation slides

Harvard University is limited to submitting one proposal to this program and the Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating an internal application and selection process. Interested applicants must submit an internal pre-proposal here
