Good Morning,

The Department of Energy has released the call for pre-proposals for the 2023 Early Career Research Program, open to tenure-track assistant and associate professors who received doctorates on or after January 1, 2010 and who are conducting research in the areas supported by the DOE Office of Science. Please note that this year, DOE is requiring pre-proposals to be submitted through PAMS with institutional countersignature, and therefore pre-proposals must be submitted through the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP). OSP has kindly offered to accept pre-proposals submitted by 9AM on January 3 instead of requiring submission prior to the holiday break. More information on the award can be found in the synopsis below:

The Department of Energy (DOE) Early Career Research Program supports the development of the individual research programs of outstanding scientists early in their careers and stimulates research careers in the disciplines supported by the DOE Office of Science. Opportunities exist in the following program areas:

  • Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR);
  • Basic Energy Sciences (BES);
  • Biological and Environmental Research (BER);
  • Fusion Energy Sciences (FES);
  • High Energy Physics (HEP);
  • Nuclear Physics (NP);
  • Isotope R&D and Production (DOE IP); and
  • Accelerator R&D and Production (ARDAP)

To be eligible for the program, a researcher must be an untenured, tenure-track assistant or associate professor as of the deadline of the application. No more than 12 years can have passed between the year the PI’s Ph.D. was awarded and the calendar year in which this FOA is released. For the present competition, those who received doctorates on or after January 1, 2010, are eligible. If a PI has multiple doctorates, the discipline of the one they have earned within the 12-year eligibility window must be relevant to the proposed research. Awards to an institution of higher education will be approximately $875,000 over five years. The funding level for institutions of higher education has been raised to encourage institutions to increase graduate student stipends.

A webinar on this opportunity will be held on November 30 at 3 PM ET. Register here.
