Good Afternoon,

The Harvard internal call for proposals has been announced for the NEH Summer Stipends program, which provides $6,000 for a period of two consecutive months to support full-time work on a humanities project. This is a limited submission opportunity, and Harvard may put forward two nominees for this program. Interested applicants from Harvard must first submit an internal pre-proposal via the link below by July 31, 2022. More information on the award and the internal selection process can be found in the synopsis below:

Harvard Internal Deadline: July 31, 2022
FAS/OSP Deadline (if nominated): September 14, 2022
Sponsor Deadline (if nominated): September 21, 2022
Award Amount: $6,000 for two consecutive months of full-time research and writing

The National Endowment for the Humanities’ Summer Stipends program aims to stimulate new research and publication in the humanities by:

  • providing small awards to individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both
  • supporting projects at any stage of development, but especially early-stage research and late-stage writing in which small awards are most effective
  • funding a wide range of individuals, including independent scholars, community college faculty, and non-teaching staff at universities

NEH funds support continuous full-time work on a humanities project for a period of two consecutive months starting as early as May 1, 2023, and as late as September 1, 2024 (for applications submitted for the 2022 deadline). Eligible projects usually result in articles, books, digital materials and publications, archaeological reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly resources. NEH funds may support recipients’ compensation, travel, and other costs related to the proposed scholarly research. More information on the opportunity, including examples of previously funded projects and a link to join an upcoming webinar focused on application writing strategies, can be found here. A previous webinar describing the application and nomination processes can be viewed here

Institutions of higher education may each nominate two faculty members per deadline. The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating the Harvard internal nomination process for this opportunity. Internal applications must be submitted via the link above by July 31, 2022.
