Harvard's shield, with the text Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Research Development Services.

Greetings,

We are excited to share this limited submission opportunity from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation. The Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards program supports early career faculty who, as independent faculty members, demonstrate leadership in original scholarly research of outstanding quality, as well as innovation in and dedication to education. Harvard University, as one institution, may put forward one nomination for this funding opportunity. More information about the award and the internal selection process can be found in the synopsis and links below. For a full list of currently open opportunities that have been announced through our office, please visit our Current Opportunities web page. As a reminder, our Research Development team is available to provide proposal development support to FAS ladder faculty.

Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program

  • Harvard Pre-Proposal Deadline: November 8, 2026 at 11:59 PM ET
  • OSP Deadline, if selected: January 28, 2027 at 9:00 AM ET
Departments or areas may require additional time for proposal review and submission. Please discuss a timeline with your departmental or FORA grants administrator.
  • Sponsor Deadline, if selected: February 4, 2027
  • Award Amount: $100,000 research grant over five years. Of the total amount, $7,500 may be allocated for departmental expenses associated with research and education.
Charges associated with indirect costs or institutional overhead are not allowed. This falls short of the 15% overhead required by FAS/SEAS policy. Because these are early career awards, FAS/SEAS recognizes this indirect cost limit and does not require further action, such as a waiver or direct charge of other costs.

Program Overview

The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation aims to advance the science of chemistry, chemical engineering, and related sciences as a means of improving human relations and circumstances throughout the world. The Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program supports the research and teaching careers of talented early career faculty in the chemical sciences. The award requires an institutional nomination and is based on an independent body of scholarship attained in the early years of a nominee's appointment, as well as a demonstrated commitment to education, signaling the promise of continuing outstanding contributions to both research and teaching. Nominees should be within the first six years of their independent academic careers. Use of the award for summer salary is permitted, but defrayal of academic-year salary and charges associated with indirect costs or institutional overhead are not permitted.

Priority Areas

  • Chemistry
  • Biochemistry
  • Materials chemistry
  • Chemical engineering

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to faculty who meet all of the following criteria:
    • Hold a full-time tenure track academic appointment focused on the chemical sciences.
    • Are from a Ph.D. granting department in which scholarly research is a principal activity and undergraduate education is an important component.
    • Are within the first six years of their independent academic careers at the time of submission of the nomination. Experience has shown that awardees tend to be close to the end of their eligibility window, but all eligible candidates are welcome to apply.
  • The Foundation generally counts the year a candidate started their first tenure track position as the first year of eligibility. This means that if the nominee has moved institutions, they will need to count that past experience as well.
  • The Foundation will consider extensions to the window of eligibility for official tenure clock stops and/or official university leave, for reasons including but not limited to parental leave, military leave, medical leave, and the pandemic. Any exceptions should be clearly discussed at the beginning of the letter of nomination.

Harvard Pre-Proposal Materials

  • Proposal title (not to exceed 15 words).
  • A statement highlighting the nominee's dedication to education in the chemical sciences (two pages maximum).
  • A current CV (four pages maximum).
  • Include a list of publications in which independent contributions and undergraduate coauthors are clearly identified. The length of this list will not be counted against the two-page maximum.
  • Include details of current or pending support from other funding sources.
  • A summary description of the nominee's research accomplishments as an independent faculty member, and a description of future research plans (page length limitations for this section are explained within the electronic application).
  • Field of Research key words (two key words minimum, five maximum).
  • A nomination letter from a Department Chair or Center Director highlighting the nominee's achievements, and the basis for selection (two pages maximum).
    • Applicants have the option of uploading this letter with their other application materials, or initiating an automated request sent from the application portal to their letter writer.
