Greetings,
We are excited to share this limited submission opportunity from the Department of Energy (DOE). Applicant institutions are limited to five pre-applications or applications as the lead institution for this funding opportunity. More information about the award and internal selection process can be found in the synopsis and links below.
DOE EXPRESS: Exploratory Research for Extreme-Scale Science
Harvard Pre-Proposal Deadline: February 4, 2024
OSP Deadline (if nominated): February 26, 2024. Departments or areas may require additional time for proposal review and submission. Please discuss a timeline with your grants administrator.
Sponsor Pre-Proposal Deadline (if nominated): February 29, 2024

The DOE Office of Science (SC) program in Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) has announced its interest in basic research to explore potentially high-impact approaches in scientific computing and extreme-scale science.
Extreme-scale science recognizes that disruptive technology changes are occurring across science applications, algorithms, computer architectures, and ecosystems. Significant innovation will be required in the development of effective paradigms and approaches for realizing the full potential of scientific computing from emerging technologies.
Exploratory Research for Extreme-Scale Science (EXPRESS) opportunities will be offered for projects in the following research topics:
- Harnessing Technology Innovations to Accelerate Science through Visualization
- Scalable Space-Time Memories for Large Discrete/Agent-Based Models
- Neuromorphic Computing
- Advanced Wireless
- Quantum Hardware Emulation
Proposed research should not focus on a specific science use case, but rather on creating the body of knowledge and understanding that will inform future advances in extreme-scale science. The funding from this opportunity is not intended to incrementally extend current research in the area of the proposed project. It is expected that the proposed projects will significantly benefit from the exploration of innovative ideas or the development of unconventional approaches.
More information about this award and the research topics above can be found in the funding opportunity announcement: https://science.osti.gov/-/media/grants/pdf/foas/2024/DE-FOA-0003300.pdf.
This is a limited submission opportunity. Harvard may submit no more than five pre-applications or applications as the lead institution in a single or multi-institutional team and no more than one pre-application or application for each PI. The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating an internal application, review, and selection process to select nominees from Harvard for this limited submission opportunity. To be considered for a Harvard nomination, potential applicants must submit an internal pre-proposal by 11:59 PM on February 4, 2024, via the link above.
