Greetings,
We are excited to share this limited submission opportunity from the Ono Pharma Foundation for PIs with creative ideas in Chemical Biology research that could ultimately transform human health. Harvard may put forward two nominees for this funding opportunity. Information on the award and internal selection process can be found in the synopsis and links below.
2024 Ono Pharma Breakthrough Science Initiative Award
Harvard Pre-Proposal Deadline: January 4, 2024
Sponsor LOI Deadline, if nominated: February 15, 2024 at 5 PM EST
Award Amount: Funding can be up to $300,000 per year for up to three years, as well as an additional 15%, or $45,000, for indirect costs each year. The total amount possible is $1,035,000.
The Breakthrough Science Initiative Awards Program accepts proposals from Principal Investigators involved in original research in Chemical Biology, defined as research that deals with the interface between chemistry and biology. The goals of the Ono Initiative are to identify and develop innovative research proposals and results that could lead to the development of breakthrough treatment solutions for patients; support academic research and the career development of promising young and established scientists; and build strong relationships within the community in order to lead to transformative research aligned with Ono Initiative's interest.
Eligibility: To be eligible, the PI must be a junior or mid-career scientist within 15 years of starting an independent academic position (starting on or after 2/15/2009). Parental leave will be considered in calculating eligibility. The PI must be a new applicant to the Ono Initiative, or, if they are returning, be proposing a project different from the one they initially submitted. The PI may not already be engaged in other sponsored research with Ono Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. and/or other grant programs with the Ono Pharma Foundation. The PI may not apply for funding to amplify current work. However, PIs may research a new idea based on a prior finding.
Recent recipients include Jarad Mason (2022, CCB), Brian Liau (2019, CCB), and Christina Woo (2018, CCB).
This is a limited submission opportunity and Harvard University may submit only two proposals. The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating an internal selection process for eligible applicants. Applicants must submit a pre-proposal to the internal competition via the link above no later than January 4, 2024.
